Expiration Date: October 13, 2022
Estimated Time to Complete: 1.0 hour

Clinical Gap and Educational Need
Beyond diagnosing HIV infection and maintaining viral suppression in patients through prescribing optimal antiretroviral therapy; providing primary care is often the HIV specialists’ most important role. PLWH frequently have multiple metabolic complications that are related to HIV pathogenesis, interplay of ART medications with the immune system as well as morbidities affected by lifestyle. These can include metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemia. Multiple members of the HIV care team are necessary to optimize health and decrease cardiovascular risk for patients by anticipating, identifying and treating metabolic complications. These include HIV and primary care providers, nurses, pharmacists and dieticians who together can collaborate to assure patients’ overall health.

Through didactics and clinical vignettes, this free interactive CME/CNE-Certified webinar will introduce members of the HIV treatment team to common metabolic issues experienced by PLWH as well as treatment and prevention measures to ensure optimal cardiovascular risk reduction.

Learning Objectives
After participating in the activity, learners should be better able to:
  • Describe at least three common metabolic disorders in PLWH.
  • Identify five physical and/or lab findings associated with metabolic syndrome.
  • Identify predictors of and the potential metabolic consequences of weight gain on antiretroviral therapy.
  • Discuss lifestyle modification interventions and available online patient education resources aimed at reducing CVD in PLWH.
